Blockchain is a specific type of database.
It differs from a typical database in the way it stores information; the chains store data in blocks that are then chaine-d together.
As new data comes in it is entere-d into a fresh block. Once the block is fille-d with data it is chaine-d onto the previous block, which makes the data chained together in chronological order.
Different types of information can be store-d on a blockchain but the most common use so far has been as a ledger for transactions.
In Bitcoin’s case, blockchain is used in a decentralize-d way so that no single person or group has control—rather, all users collectively retain control.

What Problems does the Blockchain Solve:This whitepaper aims to explore a policy-based approach to applying block-chains, or more generally Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to a limited geographical or market region. In order to do this, we first lay out the problems that DLTs face, and the mitigation strategies that the market is adopting to deal with these limitations. The DLT space is undergoing rapid expansion and the number of projects has become so great, that it is a challenge to list them all.
