That is, what is the relationship of happiness to justice? What is the relationship of justice to the other virtues that Socrates considers (i.e. wisdom, courage, and temperance)? How does Socrates use political theory to show that each and every person should prefer justice to injustice—both in the political system in which she lives, and in herself?
Consider Glaucon’s earlier discussion, contrasting living a just life in which you “have the worst reputation” and likewise lack all other external goods, with living an unjust life so well that you have every external good possible (fame, wealth, sex, etc.). Socrates is committed to the view that, even in this situation, we should prefer to live the just life rather than the unjust life. What about Socrates’ account of justice commits him to this view?
