History Response Essay. Write a 6-8 page paper on the following question, using material from both books to support your position: How important was religion in European politics, thought, and culture in the nineteenth century?
David Bebbington, William Ewart Gladstone: Faith and Politics in Victorian Britain. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 1993. ISBN: 9780802801524
Owen Chadwick, The Secularization of the European Mind in the Nineteenth Century (Cambridge University Press, Rprt. edition, 1990). ISBN: 0521398290
The essays should be written for an audience of fellow students who are not in this class and have not read the require-d readings. Explain the issues so they could understand them. Write a clear introduction and conclusion to your paper. It is often useful to state a thesis in the opening paragraph that you will defend or develop throughout the rest of the paper.
Cite all references to the reading, including quotations and summarized information. If it is obvious which work you are referring to, simply put the page numbers in parentheses. If you are using information from sources not use-d in class (this is neither require-d nor expecte-d, but occasionally someone may want to use outside sources), please use footnote citations, using the Chicago Manual of Style format.
Direct quotations are like spice; if you use the right one at the right time, it can improve the paper considerably. But if you use too much or the wrong ones, it can ruin the paper. However, A good rule of thumb is: Do not quote if you can easily summarize the statement without loss of meaning or intensity. On long quotations (more than three or four lines of text), single space and indent instead of using quotation marks. Quotation from any source without indicating it is a quotation (quotation marks or indentation)—even if you cite the reference—is plagiarism.
Please write organized paragraphs (generally 4-10 sentences on the same topic) and compose clear sentences. Do not use contractions. Pay attention to grammar and spelling. Also Please note that you should spell out the number of centuries (nineteenth century, not 19th century), and you should hyphenate it only if it is an adjective (thus “nineteenth-century Britain”). However, if used as a noun, do not include a hyphen (as in “Britain in the nineteenth century”). All essays should be double-spaced with 12-point New Times Roman font.
