Thesis: Being an authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, or uninvolved parent, can have a direct effect on the way children grow and develop.
Explanation: In this essay, I will classify the various types of parenting styles, and how they affect children’s development. Secondly, I will specify some significant characteristics parents will show
under each style, and the characteristics the children will display, varying from social skills, mental health, and self-esteem. Additionally, a brief explanation as to why understanding which parenting styles are being used to raise a child is important for the healthy development of children.
Authoritarian parents have high expectations for their children’s accomplishments and maturity, yet they are also kind and sensitive. Generally, These parents establish norms and maintain
limits via open conversation, advice, and logic. Also, Children will have high self-esteem, be responsible, independent, and have good social skills. Authoritarian parents exhibit both high levels of parental control and low levels of response. Also, Punishment, humiliation, and no show of warmth towards their children.
Permissive parents have few norms and limits and are hesitant to enforce them. Children show no fear of punishment, irresponsibility, and selfishness.
Also, Uninvolved parents have little knowledge of what their children are doing and set very few rules. Also, Children may not receive much guidance, nurturing, and parental attention.
Understanding parenting styles can help a parent influence and provide the right support for their children to thrive from young into adulthood.
